Can you send UN3373 samples with ParcelParcel?
No. Biological substances category B (UN3373) are dangerous goods (in Dutch), and ParcelParcel doesn't carry dangerous goods. The same goes for dry ice (UN1845), which is often used to keep samples cold.
For UN3373 shipments you need a carrier or freight forwarder that specialises in medical and diagnostic shipments and dangerous goods. They can also help you with the right packaging, labels and documents.
What are biological substances category B (UN3373)?
Biological substances category B are infectious materials that, on exposure, don't cause life-threatening or permanently disabling disease in otherwise healthy people or animals. According to WHO and IATA guidelines, they include:
- Diagnostic specimens, such as blood, urine and saliva
- Medical research material, such as tissue for lab testing
- Certain viral or bacterial cultures that don't fall under the stricter category A (UN2814/UN2900)
Packing instruction P650 (triple packaging)
UN3373 material must be packed according to packing instruction P650. This triple packaging contains any leaks:
- Primary receptacle: a watertight, leak-proof tube or vial holding the sample.
- Secondary packaging: a second leak-proof, sturdy packaging. Between the two there's enough absorbent material to soak up the entire contents if something breaks.
- Outer packaging: a sturdy box with the diamond-shaped UN3373 label and the text "Biological Substance, Category B" on the outside.
Customs and documents
For shipments outside the EU you need a detailed customs invoice. Never use just the general term "Medical samples": describe the contents precisely and include the correct HS code. Read more about the value of samples in the customs value of a sample.
